Phobias – Why you don’t lose control when fear fades (You get it back)

A lot of people living with a phobia have the same thought:

“If I’m not afraid… what if I do something unsafe?”

It feels logical.
But it’s actually the opposite.

A phobia isn’t control.
It’s an automatic reaction in your nervous system that kicks in before you’ve had a chance to think.

👉 When that reaction changes, you don’t become careless
👉 You become more in control of what you do

What is a phobia – and why does it feel like it’s protecting you?

A phobia is a strong, automatic fear response linked to a specific situation or trigger.

Common examples include:

  • fear of flying

  • social anxiety

  • emetophobia (fear of vomiting)

  • claustrophobia

  • fear of heights

  • health anxiety

What makes phobias confusing is that they often feel rational.

People say things like:

  • “It’s good to be cautious”

  • “This fear keeps me safe”

But in reality, it’s not caution — it’s an overactive threat and stress response.

A phobia isn’t control – it’s automatic unnecessary threat response

When a phobia is triggered, your body goes into a rapid stress response:

  • heart rate increases

  • breathing changes

  • muscles tense

  • thoughts become narrow and urgent

You react before you think.

That means:

👉 You’re not choosing — you’re reacting
👉 You’re not assessing — you’re escaping or freezing

That’s not control.

What actually happens when a phobia changes?

This is where most people get it wrong.

When a phobia shifts, you don’t lose awareness or safety.

You gain:

✔ calm in your body
✔ clarity in your thinking
✔ the ability to choose your response

Instead of:

  • panic

  • urgency

  • avoidance

You experience:

  • steadiness

  • perspective

  • control

You can still walk away if needed — but you do it calmly and deliberately, not in panic.

Real-life examples of control (not avoidance)

Fear of flying

Instead of avoiding travel or feeling overwhelmed on a plane:
→ you can sit, breathe, and stay present during the flight

Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)

Instead of constantly scanning for risk or avoiding social settings:
→ you can go out, relax, and enjoy yourself

Social anxiety

Instead of overthinking every interaction:
→ you can engage more naturally and feel less self-conscious

Claustrophobia

Instead of panic in lifts, planes, or enclosed spaces:
→ you can stay, breathe, and manage the situation

Health anxiety

Instead of constant worry about symptoms:
→ you can think more clearly and respond appropriately

How phobias affect more than just you

This part is often overlooked.

Phobias don’t just impact your internal experience — they shape your life and the people around you.

They influence:

  • where you go (or don’t go)

  • what you avoid

  • how you respond in front of others

Children, especially, pick up on reactions quickly.

If something feels dangerous to you — they often learn it is.

Not intentionally.
But consistently.

Changing a phobia can shift more than your own experience — it can change the environment around you.

Why you can’t just “think your way out of it”

Many people try:

  • logic

  • reasoning

  • reassurance

And yet, the reaction still happens.

That’s because phobias don’t sit in logical thinking. (Otherwise you would have fixed it already - right?)

They sit in:

  • automatic nervous system responses

  • learned patterns

  • subconscious associations

You can know something is safe — and still feel a strong reaction.

How hypnotherapy works with phobias

Hypnotherapy focuses on where the reaction is actually created:

👉 the automatic connection between mind and body

Through a structured, calm process, it can help:

  • reduce the intensity of the stress response

  • update the learned pattern

  • create a more stable, neutral reaction

It’s not about removing awareness.
It’s about changing the response.
So that you are in control.

What people often notice after the change

Clients often describe it as:

  • “It just doesn’t trigger me the same way anymore”

  • “I can think clearly in situations that used to overwhelm me”

  • “It feels calm — not forced”

And most importantly:

✔  You can respond instead of react
✔  You can make better decisions
✔  You stay in control

The key takeaway

A phobia feels like protection.

But in reality:

❌ It overrides your ability to think clearly
❌ It limits your choices

When it changes:

✔ You feel calmer
✔ You think more clearly
✔ You respond more effectively

FAQ

Can hypnotherapy help with phobias?

Yes, hypnotherapy can help by working with the automatic responses in the nervous system rather than just conscious thinking.

Will I lose my sense of safety if my phobia goes away?

No. Most people find they feel more in control, not less, because they are no longer reacting in panic.

Why do I still feel fear even when I know it’s irrational?

Because the response is driven by the nervous system, not logic alone.

How many sessions does it take?

This varies, but many people notice change within a few structured sessions depending on the depth of the pattern.

Severe snake phobia

I want to share my experience with hypnotherapy with Camilla. I turned to Camilla as a last resort to change my fear of snakes. I have had a phobia of snakes for as long as I can remember, but as the years went by, everything got worse. My phobia has limited me in virtually every context and has been a major factor in my daily anxiety and stress. The phobia was so severe and limiting that I couldn't even enter a toy store without someone checking beforehand where the toy snakes were, I couldn't handle people talking about snakes, or accidentally seeing a picture, without it leading to panic attacks, nightmares, and ruining my day.

Today, after four sessions with Camilla, my daily life has changed, my sleep has changed, and my anxiety has shifted for the better, with much of the phobia gone. Camilla has made an incredible difference for me, and I feel so much better!

Camilla is a wonderful person and incredibly professional throughout the process. She made me feel safe and cared for from the first moment.

There is no one like Camilla; I am so incredibly happy and grateful for her help.

Fear of flying magically changed

The first time I reached out to Camilla was because of my fear of flying. Throughout my 41 years, this fear has caused me anxiety before flights and panic attacks while flying.

Not being in control, and feeling each time I board a plane that “this might be the last thing I do,” was overwhelming. I’d send messages to everyone I loved, feeling the fear building inside me. The first time I flew after hypnotherapy with Camilla, I felt as though the fear was still there, but it was outside of me, and I had control.

For the first time, I had a choice about whether I would let the fear control me or whether I would control the fear. The second time I flew, I was aware of the fear but could even let go of needing control—it didn’t affect me in the same way at all. The best part of all this is that I can now enjoy my trips without dreading the flight home.

Plus, my children no longer have to see or feel that their mom is not in control.

Having this level of control and balance in my daily life has been so valuable. I almost get emotional thinking about how fantastic the results have been.

Some people might believe—just as I was a bit skeptical myself—that hypnotherapy is something mystical. But it’s not. Think of it as the brain being “reprogrammed” as memories are processed.

The results for me have been so remarkable that I sometimes still wonder how it’s even possible.

Thank you, Camilla, for helping me feel free and more connected to myself. You are amazing!

What I can offer is supportive work focused on change and self-regulation such as working with triggers, behaviours, emotional responses, and learned reactions. This may have a positive influence on overall wellbeing or help relate differently to physical sensations (for example pollen responses, stress reactions, habits, emotions, or pain).
Many people find this makes daily life feel easier, more comfortable and more manageable. You can read reflections from clients about their personal experiences here.
